Key Differences

Search Engine

When it comes to search capabilities, Auto Trader users can use an advanced search tool to find the car they want by selecting from a variety of parameters such as postcode, make, model, mileage, transmission, body style, and more. Customers will have the option of narrowing down their search to a cash or finance purchase. While making a decision, a calculation for the vehicle’s operating costs is also accessible helping the user with further informed decisions. There are many further options available when looking to purchase such as home delivery or click and collect.

Auto Genie also has a detailed search which includes mandatory fields as well as detailed information such as Engine, trim, body type, fuel type, transmission, drive options etc. Unlike Auto Trader there’s a step by step process which eliminates confusion among new users. Step one comprises of all of the car make and model details, step two allows adding of multiple features that are not already listed. Step number three asks for any additional information or template phrases and the last step allows setting the maximum budget. Considering that Auto Genie is very new, users have been amazed at how far they are able to drill down on the make and model of the car, something not seen on another car marketplace.

Concept Differences

There is really only one similarity in the Auto Trader and Auto Genie model, in that both websites are there to facilitate the buying and selling of cars. With Auto Trader having been around for such a long time, the method in which clients buy and sell cars has almost been set in stone. This method worked well and this spawned a huge number of websites trying to replicate the Auto Trader experience. This is both good and bad for the consumer. It gives the consumer a greater range of cars to choose from, but the huge change in listing prices between all of the different marketplaces means that some cars are only available on one marketplace and not another. Annoyingly if the consumer doesn’t search all the marketplaces they may miss out on the car they want.

Now in 2021 many, many things have changed in the car industry and Auto Genie aims to break the car buying mold that has been set in place for the last 40 odd years. The aim is to literally reverse sell. In doing so it should save both buyer and seller countless hours. What’s different with Auto Genie is that the buyer is put in a position where the seller or sellers of the car they want contacts them. This means that the buyer now doesn’t have to visit multiple websites – a major bug bear for the consumer. Instead they host a car request on the Auto Genie website that stays live until they have bought their car.

For sellers, Auto Genie has a real advantage over Auto Trader as the seller has an immediate captive audience. Similar to all the recent “we will buy your car” websites, Auto Genie displays a number of people instantly wanting to purchase your car once you submit it to the Genie’s search algorithm. You are provided with details such as where the buyer is located, their maximum budget and also any specific features they want that your car may have. Isn’t it a warmer feeling knowing your car is going to an end user that is actually looking to purchase your exact car?

Weighing Up The Costs

For the time being, Auto Genie’s service is absolutely free, as it is still in the beta stage and the user experience is still being tweaked and further perfected. Auto Genie still hopes to receive as much feedback as possible and is willing to implement different systems to make the experience as seamless as possible. The users car request will remain active on the website until the buyer is persuaded to purchase the car or alternatively deletes the request. For sellers there is also no fee currently, however to contact buyers they will need to join and login to their account.

Autotrader is free for only those cars that cost less than a thousand pounds as the ad posting is totally free in the basic plan. But £36.95 are charged for cars in the middle bracket (£1,001 – £10,000), and £39.95 for cars worth more than ten thousand pounds. The standard plan starts from £9.95 to £46.95 and £49.95 where the final premium package charges £19.95, £58.95 and £64.95, following the same conditions but getting an advert time of up to six weeks, starting from two.

As a result, we may deduce that Auto Genie, though a new platform, currently offers the same services free of cost and should also save both parties precious time.
